How many houseplants do you own?

I’m a happy owner of more than a dozen plants – most of which are succulents, a result of ‘Survival of the Fittest’ or ‘Natural Selection’ of my room (or is it me?).
It all started when my best friend began her studies in biology specialising in the genetics of plants. Since then her apartment magically transformed into a greenhouse and after a while, it expanded to my lodgings. Nowadays, I plea she should open a garden shop on Etsy or at least start a blog to educate plant murderers like me on how not to kill them.

Yet, it’s nothing in comparisons to some pictures I see on Instagram, Pinterest & co. Perhaps you’re familiar with them too – these photographs of Scandi interior designed rooms, cosy decorated and full of pots and plants, hanging or standing in every possible space. Shouting out loud: ‘Go back to the roots!’. Hashtag UrbanJungle. But what is it about? Alternative lifestyles? Nature-friendly life choices?
Don’t get me wrong my intentions are not to criticize it.  I don’t believe it’s a bad development – quite the opposite, I really like it.  Still, I wonder since when did nature become such an object of aspiration and fulfilment? A boastful display of achievement, a new kind of luxury.
‘Plant Opulence’ is an ongoing series of illustrations exploring this phenomenon. Black and gold ink on paper.
